Bridges Q & A

What is a bridge?

A bridge is a permanent oral appliance that replaces one or more teeth that are fully missing from your smile. They’re made up of an artificial tooth (called a “pontic”) that’s attached to a dental crown on one or both sides. The crowns and prosthetics literally “bridge” the gap where you’re missing a tooth, hence the name.

If the teeth adjacent to your missing tooth can’t support a crown, Dr. Mohammadizadeh might recommend a Maryland bridge, which has the pontic attached to a metal framework that’s bonded to the backside of your adjacent teeth.

What are the benefits of a bridge?

Missing teeth can cause a variety of health problems, in addition to being an eyesore. By filling in the hole where you’re missing a tooth, a bridge can:

  • Improve your ability to speak and chew
  • Properly distribute the force in your bite
  • Prevent your natural teeth from gradually moving out of position
  • Maintain the shape of your face by preventing your facial muscles from caving in

Your mouth was designed to work with all of its teeth functioning together in harmony. A bridge restores that natural design and improves the function and health of your smile.

Dr. Mohammadizadeh can restore your smile with a bridge in two easy visits to the offices at Orangecrest Family Dental Practice.

During your first appointment, Dr. Mohammadizadeh prepares your abutment teeth — unless you’re getting a Maryland bridge or using dental implants. She uses a local anesthetic to numb your teeth and the surrounding tissue, then shaves off some enamel to make room for the crowns that support the bridge.

She takes an impression of your smile after she’s prepared your abutment teeth, then sends that impression off to a lab that fabricates your custom bridge. She fits you with a temporary bridge to wear while you wait for your permanent restoration.

Once your permanent bridge is ready, you come back for a second appointment. Dr. Mohammadizadeh removes your temporary bridge, cleans your mouth, and places your permanent restoration. If everything looks good, she seals it with dental cement and sends you out into the world with a smile that you’ll be proud to share.

Make your smile complete today by scheduling your bridge consultation with Dr. Mohammadizadeh and the team at Orangecrest Family Dental Practice.
